Part 12

My dreams were uneasy that night. Visions of my little sister laying lifeless in a ditch under a bridge flicked through my mind. That girl on the table, Steph... the images blended into eachother and it seemed... it seemed as if they were.. almost twins. Some of their features were hauntingly alike. The hair... something in the eyes that was so similar it was scary. I woke up in a sweat on more than one occasion. I was even crying at one point but i would never admit that to mum and dad.

When i woke in the morning, i got my trackies on and moved into the kitchen. Mum and Dad looked tired, as if they'd gotten about as much sleep as me. They moved Mechanically around the kitchen, doing everything that they did every morning but without emotion, without the enthusiam that use to fill them in the morning. We sat down to a quick breakfast that was lazily prepared, but i didnt care. Didnt notice. There was no conversation, only the sound of quiet chewing and the ticking of the clock in the living room. Suddenly the silence was broken by the loud ring of the telephone and we all jumped. Mum and dad leaped off their chair and ran to answer it.

"Hello?.... Hello? oh... sorry officer...Again? Why do we need to come down again... Cant you tell us over the phone?... I see yes... yes of course... We'll be there soon. Thankyou... Goodbye."

"What is is honey? What did he want" dad asked curiously, possibly a small hint of hope in his eyes.

"They want us back at the morgue. I dont understand"

Neither did i. But i didnt doubt that we were going to find out.
